Flomich Street & Culverhouse Drive Drainage Improvements
Type: Stormwater
Project Manager: Andrew M. Giannini, P.E.
Owner: County of Volusia
The project included study of area west of Holly Hill in unincorporated Volusia County. Flooding frequently occurred after storms. The most significant flooding problems occur at the intersection of Atlanta and Raleigh Drives, Alabama Avenue and Derbyshire, Carmen Avenue, and the intersections of Alcazar Street and Jackson Avenue with Derbyshire Road. The intersection of Derbyshire Road and Alabama Avenue, Carmen Avenue south of Alabama Avenue and the intersection of Raleigh and Atlanta Drives have repeatedly flooded. The storm sewers that drain these areas are corrugated metal and undersized for the connected basins. The proposed improvements recommended after studying the area were: 1) replace undersized pipe with adequately sized HDPE pipe which has better flow characteristics, 2) provide 2-foot sumps in each new inlet that is required for removing sediment, 3) construct a wet detention pond with a control structure. The proposed pond is of sufficient size to treat the runoff from the entire basin and the post-improved peak discharge rates are not exceeding the present conditions discharge rate, while solving the flooding problems.
